Joy and Obedience

Part 1

 Prov. 8:32; 16:20; 21:6; 28:14; 29:6-18

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” (Thomas Jefferson.) Everything man does is in the pursuit of happiness. Life for some is a never-end pursuit for one thing or another that leads to emptiness, disappointment, depression and even suicide.  indeed, the very thing we seek after often causes misery and suffering in the end. Happiness is not a product of fame, wealth, fortune and good looks; real joy is anchored in the truth of God.

Joy is not the removal of all problems, finding the perfect job, for example, does not guarantee happiness, not when many people with dream jobs are miserable. What is the definition of joy? Is joy the state of exaltation, cheerfulness, the absence of pain? If your happiness depends on your circumstances, what happens to it when things change? Happiness cannot be contingent on others either, not when others are often unhappy. The word that translates happiness in English in Hebrew and Greek translates to blessed. Real happiness is based on the blessings of God, it is not circumstantial nor a roller coaster. Joy is defined as a satisfaction of being blessed by God. Blessings are more than material gifts from God. Material possessions are not necessarily the evidence of blessings.

The secret of true joy is the fear of God and obedience to His commands. We do not obey in order to get rewarded; we do not offer service for His favor. A child of God does not bargain nor play quid pro quo with God. The true joy of a child of God is God Himself. Pursue God, serve, love and honor God, seek to obey His word sacrifice for Him and find true joy. God does not need to give us anything else for us to have proof of his love. We were created to experience joy but joy in Him (not outside of him). If we cannot find satisfaction in God, then our satisfaction isn’t anywhere. As John Piper says, “God is most glorify in us when we are satisfied in Him.” We have all we need in Christ to be satisfied both in life and death; material things are the bonuses (not the salary). The true salary would be our relationship with God. As St. Augustin said, “O God, you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless, until they can find rest in you.”

It is the man who had it all who made this declaration “vanity, all is vanity.” The pursuit of happiness via worldly means will only cause your ruin. True joy/satisfaction is found in the fulfillment of the purpose for which you were created; anything else would lead to a life without God {Ecc. :13-14 (Eng) verses 14-15 (French)} We were created to glorify God and enjoy Him forever; you will never regret living for God. Joy of the world is attractive, but it is fleeting and empty. The joy of God is eternal and strengthening. There is no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey.
